I Am (Playing) God

Welcome to another edition of ‘Our Fallen World’

Today’s post is a heartbreaking one from Christian Headlines titled ‘I am God; Comedian Jokes her Abortion made her feel like God‘. What is there to say that hasn’t been said? How can we take such a thing and show the love of God and His Mercy? Can this show of murder, blasphemy, and pride point us to the love of God?

She said, “Get one! See how you feel! You know how my abortion made me feel? Very powerful. You know how people say you can’t play God? I walked out of there being like, ‘Move over, Morgan Freeman. I am God!'”

Abortion is a horrendous act of the misuse of power. To murder anyone, aside from the God given authority given to the government to punish and curb sin, is not only a misuse of power, it is a misuse of our bodies, our neighbors body, and a misuse of love. To murder someone because of personal gain is not to love the other, but to love the self.

All Mixed Up

In our day, people are not only told to follow their passions and sexual desires, they are told that it is impossible, inconceivable, and oppressive, to think otherwise. To be chaste, honorable, and to have self control are not qualities to persue. To control what you do with your body before there is another human life growing in it is not an option in our current culture; at least not a popular one. Self control is seen as oppressive and murder of children is seen as celebratory. We live in a day and age where dishonor, sexual immorality, and the taking of human life are more desirable traits than to love, honor, and cherish one another.

“A lot of people think that even if you’re allowed to get abortions, it should only be for a very few, specific reasons,” she says. “Well, I think you should be able to get an abortion for any reason you want.

Murder, sexual immorality, and blasphemy are clearly sins in Holy Scripture. Yet, the Bible also speaks of repentance, mercy, love, and forgiveness. Sins are unforgivable, no amount of grief, or works will ever make up for them or get the sinner to a zero balance or neutrality. Forgiveness is not a glossing over of sins. It is not given as a blanket statement. It isn’t given based on alliance with a certain political party. It is given through repentance.

Law and Gospel

Repentance is two parts; contrition and faith. Contrition is the Laws work of condemning sins, stripping the sinner of any merit or self justification. It places the mirror of God in front of the sinner, and the person sees their sins and self righteousness, they see themseves as God does; damned. The other part is faith. Faith is the comforting declaration of the Gospel. Faith is trust in God’s promises that because of Christ, your sins are forgiven. This is Law and Gospel.

Sins are unforgivable, apart from Christ. Forgiveness is vapid and meaningless apart from Christ. God in the flesh took every sin that would ever be committed, and suffered the condemnation for them, for all of them. He suffered, died, buried and because death, sin, and the devil couldn’t hold Him he rose on the third day leaving all those sins in the grave. They are gone.

I asked a few questions in the beginning of this post, and here are those answers. This horrible display of sin can indeed point us to the love of God, because God came to die for those sins. This can point us to mercy because God is merciful. God grants repentance through His Word; Law and Gospel. No matter what sins you have committed, they damn you. No matter what sins you have committed they are forgiven in Christ.

This is the the beauty of God’s love. That even though we deserve God’s present and eternal punishment, He gives us His grace, forgiveness, eternal life, and peace. Though the sins are many and horrendous, His grace is immeasurable and glorious. God cares for each and every one of us that though He knew no sin He became sin for us( 2 Cor 5:21), and that He died for us while we were His enemies (Rom. 5:8). God loves you even though you hate Him. God loves you so much that He died for you. God loves you so much that He forgives you for all of your sins. Go in peace.

If you have had an abortion and are struggling with guilt from that decision; you are forgiven in Christ. If you or someone you know is considering an abortion there is help. Please reach out to me using the contact page or contact your local church for more information.
