The Love of God

It is no secret, we are all sinners who have committed such crimes against God that we deserve temporal and eternal punishment. One, honest, deep glance into the mirror of God’s law shows us our terrible condition. Of course none is more damning than the fact that we cannot, nor do we want to, love God, use His name for Good, and to cherish His Word. Our fallen sinful nature wants nothing more than to hate God, run from Him, and to doubt His Word. Yet, the promise, first delivered in the Garden, shows us that we won’t be damned because of this fallen condition, we are only damned if we reject Him, if we reject His gift of faith. Only if we reject His love for us.

Jesus came not to judge you but to love you. He came not to condemn but to save. He came to take away your disease so that you are not defined as a leper but to be defined as God’s child. Gods love for you has cleansed you. His life, crucifixion, and ressurection are yours with the simple gift of faith that He gives to you by whispering in your ear with the Gospel, by washing you in baptism, and kissing you with His body and blood in the Eucharist, becoming one flesh with Him.

It is the gift of faith that causes us to have these new motions in the heart. It is by faith in this Promise of Christ’s love that we start to actually do the Law. It’s never done perfectly, and the law was never intended for us to follow without faith. The law was given after the promise, the law was given to point you back to the promise, to show you what love is, to show you that you cannot love without Christ.

It is Love, it is God in the flesh, taking what you deserve and giving you what you don’t deserve. It is His Sacrifice for your sins and His gift of His righteousness to you. It is His bodily rising from the grave for your justification. It is in Him, it is in this promise, that you have eternal life, forgiveness, and freedom from sin. He will come again but this time to judge the world. For you, who have the gift of faith, who believe this promise of salvation in His merits alone, for you, you will be declared “Not Guilty”. For you, through faith, have the righteousness of God imputed into you. May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, and may the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Spirit be with you. With your sins forgiven, go in peace.
